5 Things to Love About Drag Race France
/If you haven’t been watching Drag Race France, what are you evening doing? With so many global versions of RuPaul’s groundbreaking show available, we are partial — of course — to the French iteration, now in its second season.
While there are a million reasons to watch the show, we’ve got five of the main reasons to turn your captions on and hope that the translations into English are quick enough to capture the tea that France’s queens are spilling.
1. The Fashion
France gave us Louboutin and Gaultier, so it’s no surprise that its drag queens are some of the most glamorous out there. The designs are flawless, the fashion is forward, and the risks are of Versailles proportions — but it all pays off with some amazing runways. We’re not saying that the other international versions don’t have great fashion, but for Drag Race France, it’s guaranteed.
2. The Diversity
You may think it’s a just a bunch of queens from Paris strutting around, but think again. Drag Race France pulls future stars from around the world, with the franchise’s first Asian queen appearing in Season 2, Kitty Space. With queens from around France and Africa (and even Mexico, in Season 1), the show does a good job of making sure different drag styles, sizes, and cultures are represented.
3. The Lip Syncs
These songs are lé-gen-daire. With songs from some of France’s most iconic pop stars like Dalida and Mylène Farmer appearing during the lip syncs, Drag Race France is essential viewing for anyone looking to build out their next French Pride playlist. If you don’t know the music played during each episode’s lip sync, then it’s time to start learning!
4. The Culture
What’s great about Drag Race France, even more in Season 2, is how much the show leans into French culture. It’s over the top but appropriate at the same time, with challenges like “Le Croissant Show” taking place alongside familiar favorites like “Snatch Game.” There is a distinct French touch throughout the show, with a few jokes that many non-Frenchies may miss, but in general, if you like French culture, you’ll find a healthy dose of it here to appreciate.
5. Nicky Doll
She’s no RuPaul — and who is, right? — but host and queen Nicky Doll is a true keeper. She brings the right amount of sass and support to the show, definitely coming into her own during Season 2. Nicky helps create a great rapport among the other queens in the same way that RuPaul does, with her own wit and humor that’s decidedly French. Her show-stopping drag during each episode alone should be enough to make you want to figure out how to watch it wherever you are in the world.
